🎉 Graduating Post-Grad - Taking the Next Step 🎉
Jessica Otieno | MAY 17, 2024
May is the time for many graduates to walk across the stage and receive their diplomas! Maybe you're celebrating a graduate this year, or maybe you even are a graduate this year. Congratulations!
But graduating doesn't always mean receiving a degree. To graduate, from the Latin gradus, meaning a scale or step, can mean to level up in any context. It can also mean to change something gradually, step by step. So even if you're not completing a degree or formal program this May, you can still find ways to "graduate."
I've decided to graduate to the next step of my career as an author this year. As some of you know, I've written a novel and I'm working toward getting it represented and published. But it's not only up to me. There are agents, editors, and publishers involved in every step of the journey. As much as I want to be in charge, I am beholden to their opinions and I am on their time tables.
So how do I graduate from hobbyist to professional author? It is largely a change in my mindset and my intention, just like moving the tassel on a graduation cap signifies a nominal change from student to alumnus, but doesn't really guarantee the next stage is all laid out for you. You can't control the outcome, but you can control your efforts, and how you see yourself. I am choosing to shed my insecurities and excuses and claim the identity of "author." It's a big scary step, just like finishing my degree was. But like finishing my degree, it's the only way forward for me.
Where do you want to take the "next step"? Are you trying to form a daily habit, achieve a goal, improve a skill, or gain more knowledge in a topic you're passionate about? Notice how you visualize yourself and talk to yourself during this process. Choose to believe in your ability to graduate to the next stage. Are you willing to let go of seeing yourself as a "student" and start seeing yourself as an "alumnus?"
